Magazine Project Research

Magazine 1: Rowing Magazine

The cover utilizes majority of the upper and lower parts in order to fit the cover photo within the center. This makes the focus of the cover the rowing celebrating, whose fist is also interacting with the text by covering part of the words in the title. The font fits the rowing theme of the magazine, since it is a sports- like font that you may find on a jersey or popular sports brand name. It is also italicized which gives of a feeling of movement, like the rowers speeding through the water. The color of the font also goes along with the color of the feature's logo, the World Rowing Tournament 2017. The articles in this magazine don't seem to appear until the middle. It is packed with all kinds of advertisements, centered around rowing. The first article, which is written by the editor, is not found until the 14th page of the magazine. But, once you reach the articles towards the middle of the magazine, there is a lot of articles about the races that took place at the tournament and comments from some of the racers. This magazine, in particular, does not consist of any table of contents. The articles all have photos of rowers during races, from different points of view whether they are aerial shots or zoomed in. The distribution number for this magazine is estimated around 80,000, but is only distributed to members of the organization that publishes it. The magazine has, unfortunately, not been nominated for any awards.

Target Audience Research

ESPN the magazine, has is one of the top competitors with sports magazines. They are at the top of the game alongside Sports Illustrated. Their magazine gains a lot of attention since they also own one of the largest sports broadcasting channels in the United States and in other foreign countries. They feature a variety of sports, some unknown or not as popular sports such as rugby. This widens the spectrum of viewers immensely, since magazines such as Sports Illustrated does not feature sports such as rugby or cricket. The magazine has typical features that would attract your younger audience, such as featuring current top players within different sports. They also have sponsored athletic complexes at places such as the ESPN World of Sports near Disney World in Orlando Florida. This means that who ever passes the sign, now is aware of the brand itself. This is how they gain majority of their exposure for the magazine and is overall a good tactic.

Creative Critical Reflection #3 Draft

My production skills definitely became better during this project. I learned to use new Adobe software, such as InDesign. Having previous experience with Adobe programs, such as Photoshop, helped make the process an easier task, but I had to learn some new techniques in order to fit the conventions of other sports magazines. For instance, learning to justify text and place them in a certain layout that fits that of a magazine. Or, learning to export certain at certain resolutions so that the magazine is of high quality. Another production skill that was improved was communication. Since this was a group project, communication was one of our biggest factors in creating our magazine. I had to learn to work with the group to take everyone's ideas and come up with an overall plan that would incorporate everything we had come up with. Also, learning to work as a journalist. The process of creating an article and learning to gather information so I could write about my topic was new to m...
