Magazine 2: Sports Illustrated

The cover utilizes the space quite well on the cover itself quite well. The title, white and bold, interacts with the cover photo of Dwight Howard sitting by going behind his torso but remaining in front of the background. There is also a quote on the cover that has a shadow behind the letters, which helps to make it seem more realistic and as if it is part of the photo, even though it was clearly edited onto the cover. The articles in this magazine consist of different sports articles that occur throughout the entire magazine. There are advertisements throughout the magazine are of no relation to sports, a lot of them are actually surprising. For instance, there is an advertisement for cigarettes which are considerably bad for your health. Yet, there is an article about ranking athletes that are in the best shape. There are some advertisements about hygiene which may be because of the articles that are done about certain athletes may be sponsored by these products. The cover photo seems to be quite casual. It is just a picture of basketball player, Dwight Howard, sitting on steps rather than playing his sport. He is giving a solemn expression which does fit with the quote he gives on the for the cover, "What I've been through, I don't want anyone else to go through." There are also three features mentioned on the cover. The table of contents is baseball themed, and lists the features in order by page number. The page numbers themselves have a font that resembles the font used for numbers put on baseballs jerseys, which corresponds with the theme. The rest of the articles relate to there topics and all have their individual themes. Sports Illustrated has quite a large distribution of 3.2 million magazines. They have recently reduced the amount of issues they make every year.

Target Audience Research

ESPN the magazine, has is one of the top competitors with sports magazines. They are at the top of the game alongside Sports Illustrated. Their magazine gains a lot of attention since they also own one of the largest sports broadcasting channels in the United States and in other foreign countries. They feature a variety of sports, some unknown or not as popular sports such as rugby. This widens the spectrum of viewers immensely, since magazines such as Sports Illustrated does not feature sports such as rugby or cricket. The magazine has typical features that would attract your younger audience, such as featuring current top players within different sports. They also have sponsored athletic complexes at places such as the ESPN World of Sports near Disney World in Orlando Florida. This means that who ever passes the sign, now is aware of the brand itself. This is how they gain majority of their exposure for the magazine and is overall a good tactic.

Creative Critical Reflection #3 Draft

My production skills definitely became better during this project. I learned to use new Adobe software, such as InDesign. Having previous experience with Adobe programs, such as Photoshop, helped make the process an easier task, but I had to learn some new techniques in order to fit the conventions of other sports magazines. For instance, learning to justify text and place them in a certain layout that fits that of a magazine. Or, learning to export certain at certain resolutions so that the magazine is of high quality. Another production skill that was improved was communication. Since this was a group project, communication was one of our biggest factors in creating our magazine. I had to learn to work with the group to take everyone's ideas and come up with an overall plan that would incorporate everything we had come up with. Also, learning to work as a journalist. The process of creating an article and learning to gather information so I could write about my topic was new to m...
