Sports Illustrated has a well renown magazine that has various strategies to open up their viewership. There are obvious methods such as having an athlete with recent outstanding performance feature on the cover. This attract all lovers of sports and most likely younger audiences who are looking at popular athletes as inspiration. However, one of there more unknown tactics is their artist feature they have in their magazine. Ever since the early years that this magazine made publications, they have featured the work of artists.

This creates a competition for artists who want their work featured in an issue of the magazine. In order to see whose been published, the magazine must then also be look through, therefore forcing the reader to purchase or in some way view the magazine. Currently, Sports Illustrated has some pieces of art featured in their articles. They have also added a section on their website which is open for art to be submitted to be considered for a feature on their webpage. This opens up the audience to all online users and those who purchase the physical copy as well.

ESPN the magazine, has is one of the top competitors with sports magazines. They are at the top of the game alongside Sports Illustrated. Their magazine gains a lot of attention since they also own one of the largest sports broadcasting channels in the United States and in other foreign countries. They feature a variety of sports, some unknown or not as popular sports such as rugby. This widens the spectrum of viewers immensely, since magazines such as Sports Illustrated does not feature sports such as rugby or cricket. The magazine has typical features that would attract your younger audience, such as featuring current top players within different sports. They also have sponsored athletic complexes at places such as the ESPN World of Sports near Disney World in Orlando Florida. This means that who ever passes the sign, now is aware of the brand itself. This is how they gain majority of their exposure for the magazine and is overall a good tactic. 

Creative Critical Reflection #3 Draft

My production skills definitely became better during this project. I learned to use new Adobe software, such as InDesign. Having previous experience with Adobe programs, such as Photoshop, helped make the process an easier task, but I had to learn some new techniques in order to fit the conventions of other sports magazines. For instance, learning to justify text and place them in a certain layout that fits that of a magazine. Or, learning to export certain at certain resolutions so that the magazine is of high quality. Another production skill that was improved was communication. Since this was a group project, communication was one of our biggest factors in creating our magazine. I had to learn to work with the group to take everyone's ideas and come up with an overall plan that would incorporate everything we had come up with. Also, learning to work as a journalist.
