Mid Term Submission

Planning - Flat Plan

The flat plan used for this magazine surrounds all things sports, since it is a sports magazine. There are more articles surrounding the topic of soccer specifically because that the main sport this edition is covering. Articles that are more relevant have been given more pages, versus the more general articles which are only given one page. The ads are placed everywhere throughout the flat plan since there are an essential part of a magazine. Then of course, other essentials such as the cover, table of contents, and back page are included.

Planning - Interviews/Questions

Currently, the main focus of this 'Sota Sports' is the Varsity Soccer Team. The plan is to interview the some of the players on their team. Ask them how they feel about the team and what they want to accomplish this season. Overall, the basics of a sports interview will be asked. They have a decent record with a good amount of wins, so questions about those can be asked. The captain of the boy's team, Roman Ripo, is to be interviewed and hopefully another player. With the new head coach Mr. Parker, hopefully the players can give their opinions on how his coaching is going and how his tactics are working for the team. This is also Mr. Ripo's senior year of high school, making this his last year of soccer and he is soon to be a four letterman, so his opinion will have more importance and he has seen the team itself grow over the past years.

Planning - Locations for Photo Shoots

The primary locations for the magazine's photo shoots are going to be the sports fields that the Sarasota High School sports teams use. This 'edition' of the magazine if dedicated to the soccer team, so most likely the soccer field next to Sarasota High School off of Shade Avenue will be the primary location for photos. I have special access to the fields since I am in association with the soccer team, so I can get pictures from the sidelines of where the teams are benched, which is normally restricted to viewers. The location is well lit, which will make the location even more nice for photos. One half of the soccer field.

Planning - Photo Shoot Scheduling

The Sarasota Sailor Varsity Soccer Team currently has 3 games during the week of December 17th, 2017. The games are earlier than usual. Typically, the Sailors play around seven at night, after the Junior Varsity Soccer Team plays, however they currently do not have any games, which means the Varsity boys will have to assimilate to the sun's heat which they will not be used to. UPDATE: The game on the 18th was cancelled due to a no show by the referees. The game cannot be carried since no officials were present, a scrimmage was thought to be a solution but a unanimous decision between the coaches was made to not scrimmage in order to avoid injuries. However, some photos were able to be taken of the teams were warming up, since they expected the referees to show up right before the start of the game. These can be utilized in the magazine, but more will be take again on December 20th when the team plays against the Sarasota Military Academy. The boys then play Port Charlotte High Sc

Planning - Table of Contents Template

The template for the Table of Contents also derives many of its features from other sports magazines. In the top right is the title for the page, which will help to distinguish that this is the Table of Contents. The name will either remain as Table of Contents, or something that will be able to be noticeable as the the Table of Contents. In this template the articles are listed vertically, with the features in bold since they typically the most important. Hence the name, 'feature'. The articles will  be listed numerically based on their page number. The first pages at the top, to the last at the bottom. Beneath the article titles are their page numbers. The font used for the page number is meant to resemble the numbers on jerseys for players in all sports. This aids to make the magazine fit into its theme, sports. On the right is white space which will be used for pictures. These pictures will be for the features. They will correspond to the order that the features are listed

Planning - Cover Design Template

The cover template for our magazine 'Sota Sports' derives many of its features from other sports magazines. The software used to create the template is Adobe InDesign, a renown software for creating and designing print media. The font type Onky was used since it has a sports-like look to it. The letter 'a' was not identifiable so improvisations had to be made. The letter 'd' with the Onky font was used and manipulated to look like the letter 'a' so it could be read. Features are placed at the bottom like most other sports magazines. The rest of the white space is left for the cover photo to utilize. There also may be quotes added to the front under the title once more information comes from interviews and research on the features.

Magazine Project Research

Magazine 5 - ESPN The Magazine This magazine has its logo across the top, which fills majority of the white space. This could be a technique that makes the reader have to look into the magazine to find out what is inside. The features can also be found on the cover along with the featured athlete, whose picture fills the entire screen. The table of contents has a lot of design put into it. There are photos with the headlines and all the articles are in relation to sports, and all things sports. Whether it be reviews on games or interviews with athletes. The ads within the magazine are also obviously related to sports. Mainly ads that athletes are sponsored for or consumables that athletes use like Gatorade. ESPN produces around 2.6 million copies to be sold or each edition. They have been nominated for a few awards by organizations such as ASME for the National Magazine Award.

Magazine Project Research

Magazine 4: Florida Sportsman The cover of this magazine utilizes colors from the cover photo so they compliment one another. The font for the title is simple and uses only two colors, yellow and white. Words that are on top of the cover photo have a shadow behind them to give them more depth, which makes them seem more realistic and fit more with the photo. The cover includes the title of he magazine and the edition, along with the three features. Majority of the articles relate to marine sports, mainly fishing. However, there was an interesting article about Hurricane Harvey, which struck Texas and caused a tremendous amount of flooding, it is the one of the first featured articles in the magazine. There was also an articles titled "Sportsman's Kitchen" which gives a home cooking recipe which is irrelevant when it comes to fishing, and appears near the end. The advertisements in this magazine all relate to boats and fishing. They occur throughout the entire magazine.
